Here are the basic notes from our class on Tuesday, 7 April 2020 class.
Inference
Inference = an educated guess you make with information from a text and thinking about what you already know.

Fact from the story = information that you find in the text
*It's a fact if you can find it and underline it in the text!
Here's an example of a passage and some statements that are facts and inferences from the passage.

Characterization
Characterization = describing a character
There are three major ways we will describe a character:
1) Physical appearance - What does a character look like?
2) Attitude / Behavior - How does a character act?
3) Inner thoughts - What does a character think about?
**We always want to give examples from the text that show how we know what a character is like.
Example: Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender
|
Physical appearance
|
Aang is 112-year-old
monk from the Air Nation. He has a shaved head and air bender tattoos that
are blue arrows on his head, arms, and legs. He wears orange and yellow monks
clothing. He has brown eyes and smiles a lot.
|
|
Attitude / Behavior
|
Aang is almost always
happy and cheerful. He likes to have fun adventures, like riding penguins all
over the South Pole. He also sometimes gets into trouble, like the time he tried
to ride a huge sea serpent and almost got eaten!
|
|
Inner Thoughts
|
Aang worries at
the beginning of the story that his friends will judge him for running away
from being the Avatar, so he lies to them and says he isn’t the Avatar. He is
an honest person, however, and eventually tells them the truth.
