Defining Conflict
Conflict - the problem in the story between two or more forces
2 kinds of conflict:
External conflict - a problem and struggle between a character and an outside force
Internal Conflict - a problem and struggle within a character (ex: to do the right or wrong thing, deciding what kind of person they are)
External conflict
There are three major types of external conflict:
- Man v. Man - a character against another character
- Man v. Nature - a character against something from nature, like a storm or animal
- Man v. Society - a character against society, like racism or poverty
What does conflict teach us?
Conflict teaches us about characters.
- Shows the truth about who a character is
- A character accidentally stabs someone - Do they call an ambulance or hide the body?
- Forces the character to act in ways that reveal themselves
- If the character’s crush is about to fall off a cliff, they might reach out to save them and reveal their feelings
- If a character has to choose between family and adventure, it shows us what matters most to them
